Shotokan Karate is taught using traditional and cultural Japanese Methods. In order to maintain the discipline and respect you will achieve by learning Karate, you must follow the dojo rules and etiquette.

Rules and Etiquette

  • You must apply for a K.U.G.B license after 3 lessons.
  • Bow when entering or leaving the dojo.
  • Address all Instructors as "Sensei".
  • Use "Oss" in the following situations:
    • Upon receiving any advice or command from your Sensei.
    • When bowing at the start or end of class.
    • When bowing to your partner.
    • In any other appropriate situations such as at gradings or competitions.
  • Members must not leave the dojo without first obtaining permission from the Sensei.
  • Members arriving late must kneel at the front of the dojo and await permission from the Sensei to join in. They must bow before joining the class.
  • Outdoor shoes must not be worn inside the dojo. They must be taken off before you enter the dojo and placed at the side (permission must be given to anyone who needs to wear their shoes during training).
  • Students must line up in order of grade.
  • Members must train at least twice a week.
  • Tell your instructor if you have an injury BEFORE the class starts.
  • Ask your instructor if you need to leave early BEFORE class starts.
  • Karate Gis must be kept clean and in good condition.
  • Finger and toe nails must be kept short and clean.
  • Jewellery must not be worn during training. Cover up with tape any jewellery that cannot be removed.
  • Makeup must not be worn during training.
  • Food or drink other than water is not allowed in the dojo.
  • Members must NOT use their karate skills in any offensive way outside the dojo, except in self defence.
  • Members must not swear, chew, spit or commit any other act likely to offend the dojo etiquette.
  • Silly behaviour and idle chat will not be tolerated.
  • BULLYING OF ANY KIND (Actual, Verbal or Cyberbullying) by students will not be tolerated and can lead to exclusion from the club.
  • Respect must be given to all instructors and all dan grades, no matter what the age, gender or grade.
  • Questions must be addressed to the instructors only.
  • Mobile Phones/Tablets/Media Players must be switched off before you enter the dojo. If you need your phone on for any reason, ask your Sensei.
  • Use the toilet before and after class. If you have a medical condition which requires frequent access to the toilet please talk to your Sensei confidentially.
